Reply with quote | #1 | Just though it would be fun to throw some guesses of the order of who won the freestyle comp. Who thinks they know?

Reply with quote | #5 | Ron Scarpa wins a freestyle contest? Is this a video contest or a freestyle contest? I look at the comments of the people who viewed the videos and all I see is same ol thing, nothing new, do something different. Then Ron shows up with the same tricks he has been doing for 20 years and beats Zane, Andre and Nolan. Come on!! I'm not saying Ron is not the best skier to step on the water and I am not trying to knock him or his talent or anything he has done for the sport, but it seems to me this has become a popularity contest. The only thing we are missing now is KSO in a standard backtoe looking at the boat. 1st Nolan 2nd Zane 3rd Andre
You might think those sideslides are the same ol thing, but I bet you get caught in a trance just watching him do the samething over and over figuring out how he is doing it.

The contest has two aspects (freestyle - which is anything you want to do, and videography - keeping the audience's interest). Ron did do something no one has seen before (dolphin to knee ski), and I guess everyone forgot about that. Then he added some hand plants and side slides (i.e. freestyle moves) which you've never seen him do. Nolan had a great video, but he actually did less skiing than Scarpa. Nolan showed some cool personality (which is what I know you like Jimmy), but personality alone isn't the only ingredient.
I love Zane's creativity, but I think he lost points for showing too much crashing and then left everyone wondering if he really nailed it. I would've shown the make (once) and left the crashes for the out takes at the end, but that's just me. I never like showing crashes in the actual video. Just like you don't plan to crash in any event you compete in. Leave that to the behind the scenes stuff.
I've spoken to Chris and Andre about the results. Andre wasn't surprised. He's disappointed, but not surprised because he knows he can do so much better (which he plans on doing in the next round). Chris is pissed. He put a lot of energy, heart and time into his video. But once again, he's in the same position as Zane and didn't land the big one. He's getting the popular vote, but not the more critical eye of the judges. He kept asking who John Gillette was. LOL He's pissed John gave him a 5. I told him John wrote the first instructional book on barefoot. Chris' reaction was, "Give me his number and I'll give him some much needed instruction on Freestyle". Chris is very passionate about the contest and is happy to have done better than he did in the 1st round, but still wants a 1st or 2nd place finish.
I haven't spoken to Zane, Heinrich, Willie, Scarpa, or Mike. Scarpa's over in Europe and probably hasn't even seen the results. The question on Scarpa is "Will he do it again?" "Can he do it again?"
Nolan is pumped and is already working on his next video. Andre will be in the states shooting his next video. Chris has some wicked stuff planned for his next video, Zane will no doubt nail the ramp start and get back to some bad ass skiing and hopefully Heinrich will step his game up now that the World Games are over. The light bulb went on for Salber, so expect some cool stuff from him, and we hope Willie gets his crew in gear and shoots some new stuff for us to go along with the videos he has on loan from the Smithsonian Institute. LOL
Chris did give me a good idea. Throw out the highest and lowest score similar to what they do in gymnastics and diving. Something to think about. I'm going to run the numbers and see if that would have changed the outcome.
Here's a link to the numbers showing the outcome if we were to eliminate the highest and lowest score from each competitor. Chris would have won 2nd by 1/100th of a point. Everyone else stayed the same. http://www.barefootcentral.info/BFCFreestyle/Round_02/Round_02_Whatif.pdf

Reply with quote | #7 | Chuck, I think you have done a great job promoting the freestyle event. It's the most exciting thing going on in barefooting today. I guess when I think freestyle I think expression of personality thru barefooting, new tricks and taking this sport outside the box. I guess I didn't realize your camera crew and editing skills had something to do with it. All the skiers did a great job. It takes guts to put yourself out there just to be criticized. Hats off to all the skiers participating. Is having a bunch of old farts judging something new the best way to judge this event? You're all doing a great job, keep it up. __________________ Chuck Gleason and I are friends |

Reply with quote | #8 | This is just like show skiing judging issues. Whenever you have a human factor and those people have a variety of backgrounds you will come up with different results.
Fact is this is not measureable because it is how entertained are you? Well to be honest seeing 10 people try to do 2 ski bombouts in slow motion through a set of rollers would be pretty damn entertaining if you ask me? I'd give that a 10 because it would be awesome.
One opinion I have is give more weight to the public vote, after all that is who matters. Democracy rules!
Try to run the scores with 50% public and 50% judges panel. __________________ I learned to barefoot off a kneeboard behind a Bayliner |

Reply with quote | #9 | Update on how Round #3 is coming along:
Chris Morrison has been out several times shooting his next video. Expect to see a cameo appearance by his brother Al Morrison as they attempt some new moves and show the De Villiers brothers they aren't the only Freestylin brother team.
Nolan Lough is pumped and has been shooting new footage. He starts school this week, but he'll be setting time aside from his homework to edit his next video.
Paul Macdonald text messaged us saying he's shooting some footage for the next round. Of course, he's said that every round. Hopefully he'll be able to deliver this round since things have slowed down a bit at the school and with competitions.
No word from Scarpa. He may have been a one and done skier. Hopefully not. Barefoot fans around the world can't seem to get enough Scarpa.
Zane is in South Africa skiing in the cold. He was disappointed at his last results. He and Heinrich will be working together on his next video.
Willie's in Sacremento working on his Freestyle finale'. His mind is always racing and who knows what we'll see from him in the next round. We'll be in Sacremento Sept 16-18 doing a clinic with Willie & his friends, then off to Discovery Bay that weekend to participate in the charity event to raise money for the Royal Kids Kamps, but on by Mike Tembe.
Andre De Villiers lands in Texas this week and is on a mission to win the next Freestyle round. He won't be holding anything back this round, so expect some vintage De Villiers moves and a few you have yet to imagine.
The big question is whether or not we'll see any newcomers to the competition in this round. Mike Salber had an impressive 1st entry and we're hoping he cranks it up a notch and submits a new video for the next round. There's plenty of talented footers in the world. Don't find yourself sitting on the shoreline watching and wondering how you would have done. The fee to enter is Free and the upside is cash in your pocket thanks to Eagle Sports and BarefootCentral.com.
